Alternate School Calendar
We have received inquiries from several members regarding a possible change to the
school calendar for 2010 - 2011. It is unfortunate that some of these inquires may be as
a result of at least one school administrator communicating inaccurate and/or incomplete
information to our members.
Several weeks ago CUPE 15 attended a meeting with other employee group
representatives to hear from the VSB on a conceptual proposal to change and/or modify
the 2010-2011 school calendar. Subsequently, on February 5th we received a copy of the
conceptual proposal which contemplates having CUPE 15 VSB employees work additional
minutes each day to receive 10 additional fixed days off. The employer is claiming that if
this proposal was implemented it could save the VSB up to $1.3 million.
I must strongly state that what we have received from the VSB is simply a conceptual
proposal and such change would require written consent from CUPE 15. CUPE 15 has not
signed off nor agreed to this proposal.
We are in the process of arranging a meeting with the employer to discuss this alternate
calendar further in order for us to understand it better and to evaluate the effects on our
membership. We already have indentified numerous issues that require clarification
before we can even contemplate taking further action on this proposal.
If we receive positive answers to our questions and we feel comfortable with this proposal,
overall, we plan to hold a special membership meeting to seek your input.
We will endeavour to keep you posted on this matter.
