Who is eligible for Steward Education?
Anyone who has been elected to be a Steward is eligible for the basic Steward Education. Any current steward is eligible for courses in the Steward Learning Series. There are many other steward learning opportunities which are included in the monthly Steward mailing from the Local and at Steward meetings.
CUPE BC Education Calendar
The calendar of courses are posted twice a year – a Spring and Fall Education Calendar. Courses made available are based on the availability of CUPE Education arrange bases on rooms, registrations and instructors. You can view the current courses offered by searching CUPE BC website under the Education tab here.

Steward Learning Series
This new series of three-hour modules will give stewards a wide range of knowledge and skills to represent members and respond to situations in the workplace. It is the first step for new stewards. Some of these modules are mandatory for the Steward Learning Series Certificate, and some are optional. Upon completion of this series a number of more focused courses are available. See the Courses Tab for more detailed information.
Steward Education, Overview – In Town
Our local budgets a certain amount of money per year which is approved by the membership at the November General Membership meeting.  With that line item in mind, we attempt to send as many stewards to in town courses either hosted at our office of at other CUPE locals across the lower mainland. You can register the union office so we can enquire at another Local on your behalf to see if there is room. If there is, we register and pay for you to attend. You are also welcome to request registration in a city nearest to where you live.
Steward Education, Overview – Out of Town
Out of town courses are for those stewards who have taken all the courses they can in-town and now need a more intense higher level of course material. Because the local pays for the registration fee and time off for the steward to attend, the steward requesting the training needs to have satisfied a number of criteria to demonstrate their commitment to the local's business and stewarding. You must be active, meaning you are actively stewarding in your area. You must have attended two general membership meetings in the previous year to the application and report back to the membership on the course you attended.
Requests for Education
Please check the CUPE Course Calendar regularly for any courses which may benefit you in your stewarding. Because our office needs time to review and enquire with the host local if there is room before we can approve and/or notify you of your acceptance, please apply as soon as you identify a course you would like to take. All courses fill up quickly and last minute registration (less than two weeks’ notice) is rarely approved in time.
Application process:

  1. Complete application for education
  2. Send copy via email (best) or fax to the union office
  3. Secretary Treasurer checks basic qualifications
  4. If the course requested is in-town and part of steward development approved
  5. If course requested is at another CUPE Local – the ST will enquire with the registrar if there is room and register if there is
  6. A letter is sent to member either notifying of acceptance or rejection with explanation
  7. Once approved the CUPE 15 Member must complete book off to complete the process
  8. Out of courtesy to others once approved it is expected a steward will attend, barring any unforeseen circumstances. This is because there is often a wait list with other stewards interested in the course and we do not want empty seats. Please make every effort to attend
  9. Please remember deadlines offered by CUPE BC or another locals are not our deadlines. Please watch the CUPE Education Calendar on the web for updates as CUPE Education will update the status of a class when full.
