Emily Carr Bargaining & Information Bulletin
We would like to provide you with an update on what is happening with collective bargaining between Emily Carr University and CUPE Local 15 as well as provide you with information as to what is transpiring at Langara College and the possibility of strike action there by the Langara Faculty Association.
The Union and the University met on February 3rd where the Union presented a complete package outlining all non monetary and monetary items for the Employer’s consideration.
Some of the highlights of this package included language pertaining to workload, days off, filling of vacancies and temporary employees. In addition it also included monetary proposals such as sick leave, leave for family illness, bereavement, as well as wages... just to name a few.
The Employer responded to the Union’s package February 10th on some of the issues outlined above, but not in a manner that would result in a settlement at that time.
The Employer has been provided with a mandate by the Province and PSEA (Post Secondary Employers’ Association) to negotiate a two year net-zero agreement. Even the slightest cost improvement is not allowed under this mandate. This provides no opportunity to negotiate any improvements that would be considered a “cost” without the Union having to make concessions, which we will not agree to.
The Union has been notified by the Employer that there is an expectation that concessions (also known as roll back) will have to be made on benefits that you currently enjoy. We have advised them that this is not acceptable!
Your committee continues to advocate for employee rights that provide for respect and recognition of the work you do at Emily Carr University.
We have proposed the parties meet again next Friday with an intent to find a settlement that is in the best interest of the workers at Emily Carr University.
As you may have heard the Faculty Association of Vancouver Island University is currently on strike. Langara College Faculty Association has served strike notice as well. What affect does this have on Emily Carr University?
For the CUPE Local 15 members at Emily Carr University this does not affect you as you have a separate contract with the University. However, if you have to attend Langara College and there is a picket line in place, CUPE Local 15 will have a representative there to assist you with whatever information you may require.
CUPE Local 15 has expressed our solidarity and support to the Faculty Association of Langara College by agreeing to honour their picket line as they work toward achieving a fair and respectful contract for their members.
We will keep you posted as things progress with Emily Carr University negotiations and provide updates about the status of the other Colleges.
In solidarity,
Kathie Currie
