H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Member Update

Thursday, May 7, 2020

Dear Members:

We hope that you are well and finding ways to keep safe despite the difficult circumstances surrounding our current health crisis. We are sure you are eager, as are we, to understand what is coming next and when we can begin our journey back to work. The public health guidelines are evolving from province to province and we are all patiently waiting to see what opens and how it will affect our daily lives. We encourage you to continue following our health advisors and review the links below for up-to-date information from CUPE.

We have been in constant dialogue with the Space Centre around how the closure has affected your livelihood and what the best practices are to provide a continuance of operations. Working from the guidance of the Letter of Understanding and the WorkShare agreement, both parties have met to discuss a variety of concerns. The Workshare program acts as a means to allow employers to keep their employees on the payroll for longer periods than typical Employment Insurance Benefits. The hours of work and schedule are provided by the employer and are based on operational needs. From our discussions, it is clear that the Space Centre is willing to address individual needs as they arise.

The union is here to support you, the members. If there is anything that has impacted your situation at work, please do contact us. We encourage you to bring your questions and concerns forward; our advocacy is built on your needs and we will do what we can to support you through the upcoming transition.

In solidarity,

Gail Johnson                                                        Noel Graves
