Information Bulletin - Layoffs Due to VSB Budget Cuts

June 14, 2010

To: Employees affected by the 2010/2011 Budget Reductions

Unfortunately the Vancouver Board of Education is finding it necessary to layoff some of its employees to meet the budget requirements of the Provincial government. We know that any layoff process is difficult for the individuals affected whether it is a change of position or receipt of a layoff notice.

Due to the numbers of people affected this year, CUPE 15 requested that changes be made to the overall process. This request was made to afford seniority protection for members. At the same time the VSB has a requirement to minimize disruption to its operation.

At the request of CUPE 15, Irene Holden, mediator was asked to assist the parties in reaching a satisfactory agreement for the 2010/2011 budget reductions. The agreement that was reached is the result of three days of negotiating/mediating amongst the parties. It provides for individuals affected to select opportunities while minimizing disruption as much as possible.

It is our hope that in the future we will not have to utilize any layoff processes. Both parties remain committed to working in a cooperative manner to resolve all matters related to employee/member welfare.
