New Building Project Update

The CUPE Local 15 office is very old and unfortunately not accessible. For our brothers and sisters with mobility challenges please note that the office is on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. If you are attending an appointment or meeting with one of our staff, please contact them in advance to make alternate arrangements for the meeting place or call the Secretary-Treasurer at 604-879-4671.

We sincerely apologize and want you to know we are working very hard to rectify the accessibility issues with our building.

2014 - Feasibility studies were conducted and it was determined that demolishing the existing building and building on-site was the best option.

2015 - The New Building Project was approved with a preliminary budget of $6.5 million. Preliminary work commenced which included topographical, geotechnical, hazmat, facility commissioning, quantity surveyor, architectural, and project management.

After various stages of design, the revised budget grew to exceed $10 million. This significant increase was due to a number of factors including additional cost for split level parking, additional cost of labour premium, and additional unanticipated construction costs.

A buildability consultation was conducted to lower the project budget. Savings achieved were approximately $800,000 but the revised budget was still at $9.4 million, almost $3 million over the preliminary budget.

2016 - Since it was determined that there were very few options for reducing the budget further, the Board decided, on the recommendation of the building committee, that selling our property and purchasing another building within the City of Vancouver is the best option moving forward.

Notice of Motion was published in the June 2016 issue of the Members' Voice and a written report was provided and reviewed at the June 22, 2016 General Society Membership Meeting. The members in attendance passed a motion to "terminate the construction project and pursue the option of selling the current property and purchasing elsewhere".

Updates will be provided as the process continues.
