Vision/COPE School Trustees Save 8 Full-time CUPE 15 Positions
Last night CUPE 15 President Paul Faoro, 1st Vice President Miriam Puilsfer and CUPE National Representative Tina Meadows attended the Vancouver School Board meeting where Trustees were making the final decisions on the VSB 2010/11 budget. After a lengthy discussion once again highlighting the fact that the Vancouver budget crisis is due to the lack of proper sustained funding from the Provincial Government a balanced budget was reluctantly passed. While the budget contained many cuts to VSB staff positions the Vision/COPE School Trustees removed nearly $1 million in cuts saving many jobs and programs. This included cancelling a proposed cut of 4.0 FTE SSA positions in Inner City Schools and 4.0 FTE Multicultural Liaison Workers. The 2 NPA Trustees did not support these changes.
In light of the reduction of cuts to CUPE 15 VSB positions the layoff process currently underway may be altered. The union will be meeting with the employer in the coming days to discuss the changes and possible alterations to layoff notices. We will post more information once it becomes available.
